Salford City Reds braved the windy conditions on Bank Holiday Monday to test the fitness of young people at the Annual Winton Festival at the Brown Cow pub in Eccles.
Development Officers Seb Rowe and Tom Haworth were in attendance to put children through a range of activities and spread the word about healthy lifestyles. Exercises ranged from the sit and reach test which measured flexibility, to the hand grip dynamometer, which tests a person’s grip strength, a key attribute of successful rugby players. The community team also demonstrated their versatility by refereeing the annual football tournament, which involved all the children that had taken part in the fitness tests.
One child remarked “the fitness tests were really good. I didn’t know how stiff I was before and now know I should stretch a lot more. I also know a lot more about eating better and getting more exercise. I can’t wait to go to the Salford match now and see what their fitness is like!”
Seb Rowe, Development Officer at the Reds said “Today was a great opportunity for Salford City Reds to engage young people in the local community. It is important that people get the message about healthy lifestyles at a young age. This provides them with the knowledge to better manage their own lifestyles years into the future.”
Each of the children that took part were rewarded with a Golden Angels family ticket for the Reds match against Sheffield Eagles on Friday 6th June.

Sorry to say that the coaches to Featherstone are now completely sold out!
Which gives me the perfect opportunity to announce that there will be travel available to Whitehaven a week on Thursday. We realise that we have had a lot of Thursday games recently, and that it is hugely inconvenient for some to get all the way to Whitehaven so we have done our very best with the price - travel costs a very reasonable £15, with coaches leaving The Willows at 2.30pm. We know that it’s not easy, but we would like to encourage and assist as many Reds to make the trip as possible, as it will be a tough game and the lads could use your support to maintain our unbeaten record.
On another note, those of you travelling with us to Featherstone with children on Thursday will get an extra bonus in the form of a free ticket for all children on the coaches! We will also have a limited number of free junior tickets for the Quarter Final available from the club shop for those travelling in cars or by rail - these are only available to personal callers down to the shop though!
That’s all for now. Remember, book early for Whitehaven travel to avoid disappointment - we hate to hear that sad tone in your voice when you phone up only to hear it’s sold out!

Hot off the press. The reserve game against Workington, scheduled for 2.30pm, Saturday 17 May at The Willows has been postponed due to Workington being unable to raise a team.
The fixture will be rescheduled in the next seven days.
So that means if you were coming to see it you can now head to Castle Irwell and give your support to New Broughton Rangers who kick off at 2.30pm against Barrow.
Seeya there!
